Nowadays, it’s almost impossible to find a home that does not have a router device. It is the tool without which we would not have an internet connection. If it does not work properly, it makes life difficult. And if it works properly, it goes unnoticed. Whether it works well or not, you can almost always improve its performance.

That is why we are going to teach you the 8 the most important tips for your router.

There are countless router options in the market.

Each internet provider provides different models. Essentially, however, they remain the same in the mode. Whatever the case, though, your router’s (Thomson, TP-Link, ZTE, Zyxel, etc.) performance can always be improved.

Learn everything about your router

We know it’s a tedious process… It is not pleasant, but it is very beneficial! Read the usage instructions that come with the router. Thus, you will not only learn how to set up your router, but you will also see potential functions that you did not even think existed! For instance, yoy will learn how to limit, block or prioritize specific devices connected to the router.

Read the manual, and if you do not have it, download it from the manufacturer’s page.

Afterward, log into your router’s digital environment. Familiarizing yourself with the settings and the digital environment will make your job way easier.

* Your router’s log-in page can be found after your computer is connected to the router (Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable). Open your browser and type in the address bar (your router’s address is usually written behind or under the router and looks like this: 192.168.1.1). Hit “enter” and you should be on your Router’s homepage. From there you can now log-in. If your name and password are not listed on your router somewhere, contact your provider.

Find the right place for the router

One of the most important tips for your router is to place it in the right place.

In order to have a good Wi-Fi range throughout your home, your router should be located at the most central place as possible. Ideally away from walls and items that reflect the signal (metallic surfaces, mirrors, etc), but also at a certain height (e.g. on a piece of furniture).

Good air circulation around the router is of major importance to the health of your router. If overheated, it will perform worse, and it will ruin faster. Your router must not be covered by objects such as cloths or bags, but should be able to “breathe” freely.

Lock your Router

Most modern routers come with a pre-installed password for connecting Wi-Fi devices.

You must, however, make sure that the security protocol used by your router is “WPA2”. Otherwise, your password may be vulnerable.

So if your router is not locked, lock it up, and in the security option choose “WPA2”. If already locked, make sure you have the “WPA2” option activated.

Change the Wi-Fi frequency channel

Your router has 13 or 14 frequencies (channels) that emit the Wi-Fi signal. If you have too many Wi-Fi networks in your area, chances are some frequency channels are very busy, and if your router is using that channel, you may have a “bad” Wi-Fi signal. If you are not satisfied with your Wi-Fi, try Wi-Fi settings > change channel (eg from channel 3 go to 6).

There are computer and phone applications that analyze your Wi-Fi signal and show you which channel is less busy than others. So this way you can definitely choose the right channel. These applications can be found by searching for “Wi-Fi Analyzer” on the internet or in play store.

Set a maximum speed for your devices

On some routers, you can define each device individually and how much internet it will “pull”. In other routers, you can simply set a limit to its Wi-Fi speed, to benefit devices connected via Ethernet. So make sure that your devices don’t use all the bandwidth, making it impossible for other devices to work smoothly.

Upgrade firmware

Another way to improve your router, is to upgrade its firmware.

Firmware upgrading is done either through a file provided by the manufacturer on its internet page, or through your router settings.

Caution: Before upgrading the router’s firmware, read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. If the upgrade is interrupted (in case of a power-cut for instance) your router may stop functioning and chances are, the warranty will not cover you.

If this draws you back, just contact your technician when you see an available firmware update.

Hardware Replacement

The hardware of your network wears out over time. Such as the phone filter, internet cable, Ethernet cable, and the router itself. Look for physical damage in the parts mentioned above.

Someone may need to be changed. Also, if something is either too old or it looks too old, it is suggested that you change it.

Most of the parts can be found at very low cost, with the exception of the router.

However, if your router is old, you can call your provider and ask if you can get one for free (a new router may be offered as a promotion if you renew your contract with them).

Ideally, the cables should not be longer than needed. Long wires make the internet connection slower.

Turn off the router

Finally, let’s go back to the “tangible” tips for the router. If the router is not being used, it should be turned off. This way you will extend its lifespan, it will work better, as it will be restarting every time it is being used, and you will save energy.

All you have to do is to push a button.

Summarizing :

These tips on how to improve your router are the least you can do for the internet machine in your home. Read the instructions carefully.

Find the right place for your router. Lock it up. Try different Wi-Fi channels and check what devices are connected and how much internet they use.

Upgrade your software, and make sure to close your router when you do not need it.

Check the network for damage. If your router is old, ask your provider to send you a new one, free of charge. They usually provide a new router after 1 or 2 years.

Finally, if you do not have a good signal across the house, you may need to get a Wi-Fi repeater. This devise’s job is to relay the signal.

Now that you have done what is needed, you can be sure you have the best possible internet at your home!
