A few years ago, there was no home without a phone line and fixed internet was a one-way street for a fast internet connection.
With the introduction of 5G and satellite internet being more affordable than ever, consumers can get internet without a landline in their house or business and without making any concessions to their needs.
Fixed internet offers some major advantages such as stability (as long as the cabling is new), higher speeds, unlimited data traffic, lower response, lack of radiation and security as the data we send and receive goes through wires while most methods of eavesdropping target wireless connections.
The advantages of wireless internet, are portability, absence of wiring, fast installation, availability, and absence of binding contracts.
When it comes to our permanent home or business, the choice leans in favor of fixed internet.
In any other case, we need to be sure that it is worth committing to a plan for 24 months (the usual duration of internet packages).
Also, if the house is very old, we may need to replace the telephone wires with new ones.
If the house is new and there is no telephone, we will have to apply for a landline first before we get internet. Let’s look at our options for internet without a landline
Internet without a landline from our mobile phone
Any modern mobile phone, with the touch of a button, our mobile phone acts as a common WIFI modem – router utilizing the available data. The function is called tethering – hotspot.
This is the simplest and most economical solution because no equipment is required beyond our mobile phone and when we run out of data we simply do a refresh.
At the time of writing this article, Vodafone & Cosmote, are offering unlimited internet packages for use within Greece at 10.90 Euros.
So for 12 Euros (including mobile phone charges) or 40 cents a day, you will have unlimited internet for 30 days. Not bad.
However, we should be aware that the tethering – hotspot function stresses our device when it is used heavily.
Mobile Router – Mifi
Do you want to make use of mobile internet but would you prefer something more permanent than your mobile?
The solution is simple. You will purchase a mobile router (Mifi) in which you will insert the SIM card of your provider, after disabling the PIN. Then you will set a network name (SSID) and a password.
There are dozens of routers on the market for every need. Some even have a built-in battery for ultimate autonomy.
Mifi routers are mainly divided into 4G and 5G.
The cheapest 4G wireless router in the Greek market is the MR3020 of our favorite TP-LINK TL and costs 20.33 euros, while in 5G the cheapest model is the MC888 of ZTE at 266 euros.
Satellite internet
A few years ago, satellite internet required a second conventional internet connection because satellite dishes, could receive data (download) but not send (upload). Now this has changed and with a satellite internet connection, the user can send and receive data at the same time.
A satellite system is energy intensive and is affected by weather conditions and physical obstructions between the satellite dish and the satellite.
The response is high and this makes it unsuitable for some processes like Gaming, conferencing etc. However it is a one way street in remote areas where there is neither fixed internet nor mobile signal.
At the moment, the most popular satellite internet packages are the following.
Nova Double Play Sat with 25 Mbps speed, 30GB/month data volume, free equipment and 1,500 minutes to landlines and mobiles from 27 euros per month.
COSMOTE Satellite Internet with 50Mbps speed, 10GB/month data volume for EUR 30.90, 30GB/month for EUR 45.90, 150GB/month for EUR 89 and free equipment.
Internet without a landline offers some significant benefits especially for those who move around frequently. The best way to get internet without a landline and without tying up your mobile phone is to combine a sim card with a 4G router
